Visit us during 2009, when we celebrate 10 years of community ownership on the Knoydart Peninsula.

K10 events - June 2009

10/11/12th June James Hawkins art exhibition, Knoydart. James will be bringing two originals plus a selection of prints to exhibit here in the Village Hall, between 11am and 3pm. He will also be showing a film outlining his approach to his work. Limited edition, numbered prints are for sale (see images to right). The large print of Rum, Eigg and Skye is £80; all others (medium) are £50 each, plus £3 P&P (STOP PRESS: Large and Glen an Dubh Lochain only remaining).  All cheques to Knoydart Foundation - James is very kindly donating all profits to the work of the Foundation. See www.rhueart.co.uk for more information on James and his striking paintings

Update: the exhibition has been very well received. A community preview was attended by plenty of locals who enjoyed viewing James' paintings and a film which he shot in Knoydart last year. James also gave us a great insight into the progression of his art through the years.

20th to 28th June The Big Rhodie Bash. The Knoydart Forest Trust are organising the Big Rhodie Bash with the aim of completing the removal of the last of the Rhododendron Ponticum on Foundation ground. Over 50 volunteers are expected – contact Grant at the KFT office on 01687 462560 for more information, or email forest(at)knoydart.org . KFT are also organising an ongoing artwork for the duration of the celebrations, as well as workshops on wood building

27th June Craft fair. Local crafts, demonstrations and workshops, including Nick Martin's "Creatures Great and Small", silk-screen printing and felting, totem-pole carving, fancy-dress competition (dress as an animal, flower or fish), craft competition (make an insect, real or imaginary - but must be made of materials you already have!). Refreshments available all day. Western Isles ferry depts. Mallaig 11am, returns from Inverie 4.30pm. Followed by:

27th June Ceilidh! Join the Rhododendron volunteers, visitors and locals for a ceilidh in the village hall. Ceilidh band: the talented Neil Ewart and friends.

Update: what a great crew came up for the Rhodie bash - a mix of newcomers and old hands made for a keen team, fueled by pasties and local venison / goat burgers. We very nearly achieved our aim of complete eradication of the large rhododendron ponticum bushes, with most plants left over on private land. The 10 days were finished off with most of the crew joining in on the Saturday night ceilidh (popularly attended, and starring Neil Ewart and friends), followed the next night by a cracking meal (cooked by Dave Marriott).

The Craft Fair proved popular, with lots going on including entertainment from the giant-insect-and-snakes-man alongside the "make your own insect" competition. More conventional crafts including lace-making, pottery, sculpture and card-making kept people amused on a beautiful day.
